ReefBreeders Meridian Review - PAR Testing & Real Setup Results

This review is not sponsored — we bought two ReefBreeders Meridian 11 fixtures with our own money to give you an honest look at how they perform. Our UNS R90 reef tank started out under an Orphek Natura Icon, a great light in its own right, but our hardscape runs tall and vertical on the sides, which created shadowing and left our side euphyllia and gonioastrea gardens starved for PAR.

Why We Chose the Meridian

We reached out to the ReefBreeders team with photos of our layout, and they recommended two Meridian 11 fixtures mounted on a bar so we could adjust them front-to-back and side-to-side for better edge coverage — rather than adding a third-party supplemental bar to an existing light.

Unboxing & Build Quality

  • Fully recyclable, minimal-plastic packaging with a quick-start guide and QR code app setup
  • Solid black-anodized aluminum housing with zero flex
  • Manual control module for maintenance techs who don't always have Wi-Fi access on customer tanks
  • Modular design — built-in rails accept ReefBreeders' own add-on fill bars with no third-party brackets needed
  • Heavy-duty mounting arms with cable routing built into the arm itself for clean cord management

Two color options are available: the standard version emphasizes blue spectrum for SPS growth, while the Shallow Reef (14K) version swaps two blue/UV diodes for warm and cool white — better for showcasing fish color without washing them out in blue.

PAR Testing Results (Apogee MQ-510 Meter)

  • Sand bed: ~160 PAR
  • Mid-tier LPS (torches, hammers, frogspawn): 120–190 PAR
  • Top-tier SPS: 200–240 PAR, ramping toward 300+ as corals acclimate
  • Side gonioastrea garden: jumped from ~20 PAR under the old light to 140–150 PAR

The 390nm channel (useful for calcification and SPS growth) is capped at 30% in this mixed reef with softies and LPS present — SPS-only tanks can run it up to 100%.

Score Breakdown

  • Overall build/finish/fluorescence: 10/10
  • Expandability (built-in rails for add-on bars): 10/10
  • Ease of setup and use: 10/10
  • App/software: 7/10
  • Dedicated red LED channel: 8/10 (no separate red channel, though white channels carry red spectrum)
  • Overall score: 9/10

Final Verdict

If Radion and Kessil had a baby, this is what it would look like — Radion-level fluorescence with Kessil-style shimmer, at a strong price point for the performance. Coral growth has been strong with no burn thanks to even PAR spread across the tank.
