Amazing New Garden System for Your Aquarium from Europe! Grow Terrestrial Plants in Your Aquarium

The AQUAEL Versa Garden, a wall-mounted freshwater (FW) refugium system, has been popular in Europe for years and just landed in the U.S. We mounted it on our 130-gallon planted discus display to add a jungle-style wall of above-water growth.

Why It's Especially Useful for Cichlid and Goldfish Tanks

Cichlids, goldfish, and koi are notorious for eating underwater plants, which normally handle nitrate and phosphate export naturally in a planted tank. The Versa Garden solves that by growing plants entirely outside the tank, using aquarium water pumped up and trickled through a hydroponic media — nearly hollow clay spheres that hold moisture and let roots spread — then draining clean water back down.

Modified Mounting

We didn't have a wall to mount this behind our display, so we adapted it: an AQUAEL PAT Mini pump feeds the system, and the whole unit is supported by the tank's light bars and resting on the intake hardware rather than screwed into a wall stud. Individual plant baskets slide in and out, so trimming or maintaining a single plant doesn't mean disturbing the whole planter.

A Caution on Edible Plants

The box mentions growing herbs, but we'd caution against eating anything grown in a system pulling water from a tank that's been treated with medications, dechlorinator, or other chemicals — those compounds get absorbed into the plants.
