Hardscape First: Leave Room to Clean
One of the most common aquascaping mistakes is packing wood too close to the glass. We always leave enough gap between wood and glass to run a magnet cleaner — skip that step and you'll be fighting algae on unreachable glass for the life of the tank. Propping the back of the wood up (instead of laying it flat) also creates far more usable depth in the layout.
Building Structure with Biomedia and Rock Wool
To build height and hold irregular rockwork in place, we packed CCM Matrix biomedia (rinsed first — it's very dusty) into media bags and used rock wool to fill gaps and mound the hardscape where needed. When working with liquid CA glue to bond rock to wood, always work with good ventilation — the fumes are genuinely toxic in an enclosed space.
Substrate Layering
2Hr Aquarist APT Feast as the base nutrient layer — a rich substrate additive that continues fertilizing plants for up to 12 months. It releases ammonia, so it's ideal for fishless cycling but should never be added to an established, stocked tank.
AQUAEL H.E.L.P. Advanced Soil (Japanese volcanic soil) on top, with a variable grain size — small, medium, and large grains straight out of the bag — for a more natural substrate bed.
River stones and sand/gravel filler were layered in gradually, working in different rock sizes and colors rather than a single uniform stone to keep the layout looking natural instead of overly manicured.
