Huge Discus Planted Display Tank Update Part 4 - Upgrading the Lighting

Part 4 of our 130-gallon discus planted freshwater (FW) tank series: adding a second UNS Titan light. The tank was intentionally set up with just one light at first, letting plants establish and adapt before scaling up to full lighting — now that the plants have grown in heavily, shadowing was blocking both plant growth and visibility of our discus.

Why the UNS Titan

  • All-aluminum construction with strong heat sinks and a built-in diffuser — no harsh glare even mounted high above the tank
  • Factory-installed stainless steel hanging system, ready to mount with no extra hardware
  • Large power supply with a waterproof connector and an inline on/off switch
  • Strong red and green spectrum output for lush plant growth and coloration

Mounting

The lights mount on UNS Pro hanging bars attached to the cabinet rather than the tank rim, allowing extra height for wider light spread. Both fixtures were positioned close to center, so the unplanted side areas intentionally receive less direct light — keeping algae growth down where nothing is planted to use the extra light anyway.
