Master Aquarium Water Testing: Ammonia, Nitrite, & Alkalinity (Freshwater & Saltwater)

Of all the water parameters you could test, three matter most for both freshwater (FW) and saltwater (SW) tanks: alkalinity, ammonia, and nitrite. This is your first-aid, go-to test panel for figuring out what's actually wrong with a tank.

Why Alkalinity Beats pH as a First Check

pH alone is unreliable in freshwater — it's affected by CO2 levels, driftwood tannins, and more. Alkalinity is what actually drives and stabilizes pH, in both fresh and saltwater. Saltwater tanks typically run higher natural alkalinity, which supports strong bacterial activity; freshwater tap water often runs low, and if alkalinity drops below 2° KH (German hardness), cycling a tank becomes genuinely difficult.

How to Run Each Test (Fritz/API-style kits)

  • Alkalinity: Add reagent drop by drop to a 5ml water sample until it shifts from blue to yellow — each drop equals 1° KH. Flush your syringe or pipette three times between uses to avoid residue skewing results.
  • Ammonia: Two-reagent test, 8 drops each, read after about 1 minute against the included color chart. Between 0 and 0.25 ppm is effectively a rounding margin; 0.5+ means there's real ammonia present. Cities using chloramine disinfection can trigger false-high readings — always use a chloramine-rated dechlorinator, and test your tap water separately to compare.
  • Nitrite: Single-reagent test, 5 drops, read after about 2 minutes. A clean bright blue reading means no nitrite; any purple tinge indicates nitrite is present. Anything above 1 ppm with live fish in the tank calls for a water change.

What Each Test Tells You

Ammonia is your earliest warning sign that something has broken down in the tank — overfeeding, a die-off, or a filtration issue. Nitrite is the mid-cycle indicator as ammonia converts through the nitrogen cycle; a spike signals biological filtration trouble and can stress fish, damage coral, and contribute to algae blooms. Together with alkalinity, these three tests tell you exactly where a fishless or in-progress cycle stands.
