Shallow tanks are underrated — they open up some really fun aquascaping options. This build sets up a UNS 45S shallow rimless tank as a low-tech, minimal-maintenance freshwater (FW) setup, ideal for inverts or a blackwater tannin-style tank.

UNS atomizer, running mist over emersed wood and plants for a striking visual effect — especially dramatic in a shallow tank where the mist is more visible
Sicce internal filter, tucked into the hardscape to stay hidden rather than sitting exposed
Aqua Worx Orion Nano light, mounted high above the waterline for good spread across the shallow footprint
Planting: Anubias Only
The entire plant list is various anubias species and sizes — low light, low nutrient demand, and an easy match for a low-tech, non-CO2 setup.
Hardscape & Substrate
UNS Icelandic lava rock (a lighter, more porous variant than standard black lava rock)
UNS Controsand Monterey gravel — a new-to-us substrate at the time, chosen for how it complements the lava rock's texture and color
Cycling
This tank follows a standard fishless cycling protocol before any livestock goes in, with weekly fertilization being the only ongoing maintenance need.
