Not every beginner freshwater (FW) tank has to be a single betta. For families with young kids, we love setting up a male-only fancy guppy tank — more color, more constant motion, and multiple fish swimming up to little hands at feeding time. This build uses the UNS 30A all-in-one, an easy, compact, low-tech planted setup that looks custom-built despite its simple footprint.
Why an All-in-One for Beginners
The UNS 30A's built-in triple-chamber filtration eliminates the need for a separate hang-on-back filter, keeping the whole system compact enough for a countertop. Frameless, low-iron glass with 45° cut corners gives true color rendition for showing off guppy coloration.
Filter Media Setup

CCM Matrix biomedia (rinsed first — it's very dusty) for extra bacterial capacity, since a heavily-stocked guppy tank benefits from more surface area
Sponge media, with room in the middle chamber for a heater if needed
Hardscape & Planting (No Substrate Rooting Needed)
UNS Dragon Stone show pieces provide natural nooks for gluing epiphytes — several varieties of anubias and bucephalandra, using aquarium-safe glue only (never hardware-store super glue, which can contain harmful additives). No rooted plants were used, keeping long-term maintenance minimal: just occasional liquid fertilization for the epiphytes.
Substrate & Lighting
UNS Mojave sand (rinsed thoroughly — it's dusty) finishes the look, covering the base of the Dragon Stone so it reads as part of the hardscape rather than something placed on top. Lighting is an AQUAEL Leddy Slim in white to match the tank's monochromatic aesthetic while staying gentle enough not to overpower the low-light epiphyte setup.
Cycling
This tank follows our standard fishless cycling method — ammonium chloride and bacterial colony, roughly 3 weeks before fish go in.
