You've picked the kind of aquarium you want. Now the glass box itself — and the tank aisle has its own language: low-iron, reef-ready, overflow, sump, wet/dry, Euro-brace, versa-top. This page decodes the three tank styles and every term you'll run into, with pictures and links to the real tanks, so you can walk into the showroom knowing exactly what you're looking at.
The fish decide the size, and the aquarium type decides the features. A planted aquascape wants a rimless low-iron tank; a big FOWLR wants a drilled tank with a sump; a first freshwater community is perfectly happy in a rimmed kit. Read the four aquarium types first if you haven't.
Rimmed, rimless, or all-in-one
Every aquarium we sell falls into one of these three. The difference is how the glass is held together and where the filtration lives. Click any photo or title to see the tanks.
Rimmed (framed)
The classic — Marineland, Aqueon, JuwelGlass panels bonded with silicone and finished with a plastic frame top and bottom. The frame hides the seams, stiffens the tank, and gives lids, hoods, and hang-on filters something to sit on. Many come with a center brace on longer sizes. Juwel's Rio systems take it further with the light and filter built in.

Rimless
The aquascaper's tank — UNS, Planet AquariumsThicker glass, precise silicone seams, and no frame at all. Usually low-iron glass, so the view is crystal clear from every side. Open top means hanging lights, lily pipes, and nothing between you and the aquascape.

All-in-one (AIO)
Filtration built in — DFW Tideline Lagoon, UNS Dual AIOA rimless tank with a filtration chamber built into the back. Water flows over a weir into the chamber, through a sock or media, and a return pump sends it back. No plumbing, no separate sump — everything is inside the footprint. The Tideline Lagoon runs 13 to 62 gallons; the UNS Dual AIO runs fresh or marine from 6 to 48.

- Clean and compact — no hoses, no cabinet full of gear
- Great for nano reefs and planted aquascapes alike — the chamber takes a skimmer or a CO2 reactor

What the spec sheet is actually telling you.
Low-iron glass
Also called "ultra-clear" or "Starphire." Regular float glass has a green tint you see on the edge; low-iron removes it, so whites are white and reds are red. Standard on UNS, Tideline, and Planet rimless tanks.

Standard (float) glass
The glass in most rimmed tanks. Perfectly strong and clear head-on, slightly green at the edges and through thick panels. Costs less; fine for fish-focused tanks.

Tempered vs. annealed
Tempered glass is heat-treated and stronger, but can't be drilled — it shatters. Annealed glass can be drilled for overflows. Many rimmed tanks use a tempered bottom; check before drilling anything.

Silicone seams
The bond holding the panels together. Black silicone hides the seam on framed and reef tanks; clear silicone nearly disappears on rimless aquascaping tanks. Both are equally strong when done right.
Mitered (45°) edge
Front corners cut at 45° so the glass meets edge-to-edge with almost no visible seam — the view wraps around the corner. Every UNS rimless tank is built this way, from the 3-gallon nano to the R-series reef systems.

Euro-brace
A glass strip around the top perimeter of a rimless tank, bonded flat. Stiffens big tanks without a plastic frame or center brace. Common on large Planet OceanVue rimless and reef tanks.

Center brace
The plastic cross-bar in the top frame of rimmed tanks 36" and longer. It stops the long panels from bowing. Don't cut it off — and plan your light and lid around it.

Glass vs. acrylic
Glass scratches less, stays clear, costs less, and is what we stock. Acrylic is lighter and can be molded into curves, but scratches easily and yellows over time. For homes and offices, we recommend glass.

Anything that connects the display tank to filtration below it.
Reef-ready / drilled
A tank with holes already drilled and an overflow box installed, ready to plumb to a sump. Despite the name, it's just as right for a big freshwater or FOWLR tank as for a reef.

Internal overflow
A glass box inside the tank, usually in a back corner or centered on the back wall. Water spills over the top edge (the weir) into the box and drains down to the sump. Skims the surface and hides the plumbing.

Corner-flo
Marineland's name for a rimmed tank with an internal overflow in one or both back corners. The classic reef-ready freshwater and saltwater display for decades.

External (low-profile) overflow
A slim weir inside the tank and the plumbing box outside the back glass — DFW's Tideline overflow on Planet tanks, for example. Takes almost no display space, so the whole footprint stays usable for aquascaping.

Hang-on (siphon) overflow
Adds a sump to a tank that isn't drilled. A U-tube siphon pulls water over the rim into an external box. Works, but a lost siphon can flood a floor — we prefer drilled tanks whenever possible.

The threaded fitting with a gasket that seals a pipe through a drilled hole in the glass. Every drain and return on a reef-ready tank goes through one. Hand-tight plus a quarter turn; never wrench it.

Drain, emergency & return
The drain carries water down to the sump; the emergency drain is a second pipe that only runs if the main one clogs; the return brings filtered water back up. A three-pipe setup is quiet and flood-safe.

Sump
A second tank under the display, divided into chambers for filter socks, a skimmer, media, heaters, and the return pump. Adds water volume and hides every piece of gear. Our pick for any full-size reef or FOWLR. Wet/dry or sump? →

Wet/dry (trickle) filter
A sump with a tower of bio-balls or media that water trickles through in open air — massive oxygen and bacteria capacity. Ideal for big freshwater and FOWLR bioloads; less common on reefs because it can drive nitrate up.

A lit chamber in the sump growing macroalgae (or holding a deep sand bed) to eat nutrients and breed copepods. Free nutrient export and live food for a reef. UNS R-series sumps have a chamber built for it.

Protein skimmer
Saltwater only. Pumps a column of fine bubbles that organics stick to and foam off into a cup — waste removed before it breaks down. Lives in the sump or an AIO chamber.

Canister filter
A sealed bucket of media under the tank, fed by intake and return hoses. Big capacity, quiet, invisible. The standard for planted and freshwater displays that aren't drilled.

Hang-on-back (HOB)
Hooks over the rim, pulls water up, runs it through a cartridge or media, and waterfalls it back. Simplest filter there is; sized for rimmed tanks under about 75 gallons.

AIO rear chamber
The built-in "mini sump" of an all-in-one tank: a weir, a sock or sponge, media basket, heater slot, and return pump. Compact, no plumbing, fixed capacity. Shown: the UNS Dual AIO chamber.

Auto top-off (ATO)
A sensor in the sump or chamber and a small pump in an RO/DI reservoir. Replaces evaporation automatically so salinity and water level stay put. Near-mandatory on saltwater; handy on any rimless tank.

Glass top (versa-top)
A hinged glass lid that sits in the frame of a rimmed tank, with a plastic back strip you cut for filters and cords. Cuts evaporation and stops jumpers; your light sits on top.

A flat sheet of glass resting on small clips that hook over the rimless edge. Keeps the clean look while holding water and fish in. Polycarbonate and acrylic versions are lighter.

This is the one people get wrong. Some stands fit any tank with the same footprint; others are built for one brand's exact tank and nothing else. Buy the wrong one and a rimless tank can crack on a stand that's a quarter-inch off.

UNS wood and glass stands are built to the exact footprint of each UNS tank (a 60U stand is for a 60U). A rimless tank needs full, dead-flat support under the whole bottom pane, so the match matters. Not for other brands' tanks.

Leveling mat
The thin foam or rubber sheet between a rimless tank and its stand. It evens out tiny high spots so the bottom glass isn't stressed. Never set a rimless tank straight on hardwood, stone, or a stand top that isn't dead flat.

Tank, matching stand, and often hood and filter sold as one package — Marineland and Aqueon do these well. The fastest, cheapest way to a complete freshwater setup.

Weight
Water weighs 8.3 lb per gallon before rock and sand. A 75 is 700+ lb; a 180 pushes a ton. Only an aquarium stand rated for the tank — never a dresser, desk, or TV console — and check the floor on big systems.

Standard rectangle
The classic footprint (a 55 is 48×13, a 75 is 48×18, a 125 is 72×18). Long tanks give active fish swimming room; width gives you aquascaping depth.

Equal length and width — UNS 45U, 60U, and 20-gallon cubes. Great front-to-back depth for a scape or a coral bommie; fewer inches of swimming length.

Peninsula
Overflow on one short end so the tank juts into a room and is viewed from three sides. The UNS R120, R150, and R180 Peninsula reef systems (99–147 gal display, sump and aluminum stand included) are the showpiece version; the Tideline 13.4G Peninsula AIO is the desktop version.

Choosing a tank
Is a rimless tank less safe than a rimmed one?
No. Rimless tanks use thicker glass and precise seams; the frame on a rimmed tank is mostly there to hide seams and hold accessories. What a rimless tank does need is a perfectly flat, level stand and a leveling mat.
Do I really need low-iron glass?
For a planted aquascape or a showpiece reef, it's worth it — colors are true and the tank disappears. For a fish-focused freshwater or FOWLR tank, standard glass looks fine and saves money.
Will a UNS or Juwel stand fit another brand's tank?
No. UNS, Juwel, and Tideline stands are built to their own tank's exact footprint and construction. Aqueon, Marineland, and Planet stands are universal for any rimmed tank with a matching footprint. Bring us the tank model and we'll match the stand.
Can I add a sump to a tank that isn't drilled?
Yes, with a hang-on overflow, and we can also drill many annealed-glass tanks in the shop. Tempered panels can't be drilled. If you know you want a sump, buy reef-ready from the start.
Wet/dry or sump — which one?
Wet/dry for heavy freshwater and FOWLR bioloads where oxygen and bacteria capacity matter most. A reef sump for saltwater with corals, where you want room for a skimmer, refugium, and dosing and don't want a nitrate factory. Full comparison here.
Is an all-in-one good for a first saltwater or planted tank?
Yes for a coral-focused nano or a desktop aquascape — a Tideline Lagoon or UNS Dual AIO is the cleanest way in. For a reef you plan to grow, or any tank with larger fish, a drilled tank with a sump gives you room to add equipment later.
