Care & Planting: Marimo Moss Balls are not true moss but a unique spherical growth form of the filamentous algae Cladophora aegagropila. They require no special care beyond periodic light and occasional rolling in the palm of your hand to maintain their round shape and even light exposure on all sides. They can be left loose on the substrate, placed in a bowl, or lightly weighted down. Marimo tolerate a wide range of water parameters and lighting, making them ideal for low-tech and nano tanks, and they help absorb excess nutrients while adding a natural, tidy aesthetic. In parts of Japan, wild Marimo colonies are a protected natural monument due to their rarity in this spherical growth form.
