Nitrate is produced as the final stage of bacterial breakdown in the nitrogen cycle from ammonium and nitrite. It is therefore an indicator of organic pollution. In aquariums, the nitrate level can be reduced by regularly changing the water and adding fast-growing plants. In combination with phosphate, excessive nitrate levels can promote algae growth. On the other hand, in densely planted aquariums, a nitrate deficiency can lead to slow growth and yellowish leaves.
