Riccardia moss (scientifically known as Riccardia chamedryfolia) is a highly sought-after, miniature liverwort. Native to Southeast Asia, it is affectionately called Coral Moss or Mini Pellia in the aquascaping hobby because of its deep green, compact, and intricate coral-like branching structure.

Aquascaping & Care
Riccardia is prized for the refined, textured "aged" look it brings to planted tanks. Because it naturally anchors itself, it is perfect for adhering to driftwood, porous lava rocks, or steel mesh to create stunning carpets or vertical walls.
Ideal Water Parameters
  • Temperature: 64°F–75°F (18°C–24°C)
  • pH Level: 5.0 to 7.4
  • Water Quality: Sensitive to high temperatures (above 83°F/28°C can cause the plant to melt); clean water and stable parameters are heavily recommended.
Lighting & CO₂
  • Lighting: Moderate to high lighting promotes dense, compact growth and an intensified deep green coloration. Lower light can result in paler, slightly translucent, and looser growth.
  • CO₂: While not strictly mandatory for survival, \(CO_{2}\) injection and regular liquid fertilizers are highly recommended to prevent hair algae from overtaking the slow-growing fronds and to achieve the signature "coral" plating effect. 
Planting & Maintenance
  • Attaching: To introduce it into your tank, break it into small, dime-sized pieces. Either tie it down using thin fishing line/cotton thread or apply a tiny amount of cyanoacrylate (gel-based) superglue to a hardscape surface.
  • Trimming: Because it grows so densely, the bottom layers of large, thick mats can become shaded, die off, and rot in the middle. Regularly trim or split the clumps to keep them healthy and prevent them from breaking apart and floating around the tank.
Why Shrimp Keepers Love It
The complex, branching structure of Riccardia provides a fantastic microhabitat for freshwater shrimp. Baby shrimp (shrimplets) use the dense, tight cushions as a safe haven to hide from predators, while also grazing on the beneficial biofilm and microfauna that naturally collect on the plant.
